MY STORY
photo of Karin BrownIn 1993, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. There were not many effective treatments available at that time to help me deal with this condition. I gained 30 lbs. because the pain and fatigue got in the way of my motivation to exercise. I was also using food to cope. I discovered that inactivity only made me feel worse. So, ten years ago, I began practicing yoga as a way to help manage the symptoms of fibromyalgia. I began exercising again and currently use walking and hiking for my cardiovascular health. I have read and continue to read every book that I can get my hands on about healthy eating and exercise. I’ve since lost the 30 pounds and have maintained it for the past 8 years. The regular practice of yoga, walking, and healthy eating has provided tremendous benefits physically, mentally, and spiritually.
I know first hand the sadness and frustration of dealing with chronic pain, fatigue, and weight gain. It was at that time that I went to see a Life Coach. This was invaluable in helping me move forward with my life. My personal journey to reclaim my health, along with the knowledge that I’ve gained are the reasons I chose to become a Wellness Coach. I completed my training as a Certified Professional Coach (CPC) through the Academy for Coach Training in 2002. Following graduation, I established my business, Life Tapestry Coaching, Inc., and have been providing coaching services ever since.
Prior to working as a wellness coach, I had a career as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for 8 years. I provided direct counseling and assessment services as part of a multi-disciplinary rehabilitation team in a hospital setting. I managed a personal caseload and provided services to a variety of hospital programs including inpatient, outpatient, Brain Injury Day Treatment, Work Hardening and Pain Management. I facilitated both individual and group counseling sessions to assist patients in identifying the tools and resources needed to help them take action and move forward.
Additional educational background includes a B.S. in Business Administration through the University of Minnesota, School of Management (1982) and an M.S. in Rehabilitation Psychology through the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1989). I have also completed teacher training programs with certified Iyengar Yoga instructors Julie Lawrence, Dean Lerner, Rebecca Lerner, and Mary Dunn and have taken many workshops with other nationally and internationally recognized teachers. I am currently teaching yoga in the Portland, OR area.
